A Loire Year

#Loire in Flood - What a lot of water eek!

The Loire is on yellow flood alert and is probably the highest I have seen it since 2004. The sheer volume of water is incredible and quite daunting. In Thoureil in the early evening there is an eery silence broken only by the sound of water rushing past the empty pontoon. All the wooden boats are moored in the port but with water levels rising they are getting dangerously close to the road. The Loire has broken it's banks at several points and is flooding into the fields. I've seen a few houses closest to the river become islands surrounded by water. I am guessing the island of Behuard will be starting to evacuate soon or at least be moving things to their first floor. Xavier who lives on the island told me once that this was a great time of solidarity and everyone helped each other to move their furniture upstairs and then simply used a boat to get to work. He was very practical about it and not alarmed at all. Hope he is okay today.
