Shibden Hall and Gentleman Jack

Today’s podcast: a fascinating book about houses, and how they both shape and reflect the lives of the people who live in them. (Lives of houses, ed by Hermione Lee and Kate Kennedy.) This set me thinking about houses we visited on our last trip to England, and particularly Shibden Hall near Halifax, which we visited last October.

Shibden was the home of the diarist Anne Lister from 1815 until her death in 1840. She became sole owner of the Hall in 1836 and threw herself energetically into a program of renovations, reflecting the Victorian Medieval/Jacobean styles that were then becoming fashionable (Extra 1). She was largely responsible for the appearance of the Hall today.

We would never have known about Anne and Shibden Hall had it not been for the television series Gentleman Jack, starring Suranne Jones as Anne (Extra 2). The series was filmed at Shibden Hall, continuing the connection between Anne Lister and the house she loved.
