Tallest Structure in London #8

Since the time when people cared about these things, there have been 10 structures that have been, at one time or another, the tallest structure in London. This blip is #8 - Crystal Palace transmitting station. It is 219m tall and was the tallest structure from 1950 to 1991. It is the main TV transmitter for London and was built among the ruins of the Crystal Palace, a cast-iron and plate-glass building originally erected in Hyde Park to house the Great Exhibition of 1851. After the exhibition, the building was rebuilt and stood here from 1854 until its destruction by fire in 1936. The staircase at the bottom of the photo used to lead up to the Crystal Palace.

My first ever blip on 1st January, St Paul's cathedral, is #6. It is 111m tall and was the tallest building in London from 1710 to 1939.

btc blipped a fantastic photo of #7 yesterday, Battersea Power Station. At 113m tall, it was the tallest structure from 1939 to 1950.

My second ever blip on 2nd January, the Shard is #10. It is 310m tall and has been the tallest building in London since it topped out in 2010.

I'll blip the rest occasionally as I pass them
