Not a Hoverfly

This is a Tree Wasp I believe.
Dolichovespula sylvestris

At first glance, from a distance, I thought it was a Hoverfly. I have been looking out for them since Mrs. K. bought me an excellent book called Britain’s Hoverflies. It is an interesting challenge to see which hoverflies we have in our area.

But on downloading this at home it became clear it is a wasp.
I do not know a lot about wasps but I am fairly sure it is a Tree Wasp.
They are not confined to trees and can build nests underground or under the eaves of buildings.

The social and sex lives of Tree Wasps is interesting but is much too complex to set out here.

But I am always pleased to bjip something which I have not posted before.
