Saturday July 27th

Mr Norton* left – we were quite sorry as we had got quite used to having him about the place.

Mummie is still ill. We have to go to Birmingham** to see a specialist.

Hitler still drags on his futile “war of nerves”. I wonder if anyone pays any attention to him now. They lost 28 planes yesterday.

There was a “peace offensive” last week or so, but I hardly remember what it was all about! Lord Halifax made a fine speech*** in reply.

I wish Mummie looked better. I feel very concerned about her.

* The lieutenant billeted on the family on 8th July 1940.
** 40 miles away from Malvern.
*** This is likely to be the speech delivered by Lord Halifax on 22nd July. The full text is available at http://www.ibiblio.org/pha/policy/1940/1940-07-22a.html.
