Hobbs's Run

Mother & Daughter

I never knew how many different names these things go by. Before yesterday I hadn't heard the expression "cafetierre" before. In Australia we generally refer to them as "coffee plungers" although they are occasionally called "French presses".  Well now, if these things are French, they must have a gender. So let's have them be female. Hence these two trusty old devices can be mother (10 cup) and daughter (2 cup)

Yesterday's lively discussion on the subject of coffee inspired me to shoot this mono and to have Silver Efex  tint it "coffee" toned. Thank you to everyone who took part. In summary (at the time of writing) the preferred methods of making coffee were:

Cafetierre/French press/coffee plunger: 6
Nespresso/coffee pods: 5
Espresso machine: 5
Don't do it. Have a cup of tea: 4
Good quality instant: 2
Moka pots/coffee percolators: 2
Drip/filter devices: 2
Aeropress: 2

Most people seem passionately committed to their preferred approach for the task. And why not? THIS IS COFFEE WE ARE TALKING ABOUT. It is important!! If I DID buy an espresso machine, it seems clear that I have to have a decent one. There seems agreement that the cheapest ones are a waste of time, money and effort - even IF they continue to function. I shall keep you posted. In the meanwhile we are proceeding to fine tune the means we already have (fresh grinding and careful blend selection) .. and somewhere along the way we obviously need to try a coffee pod cup or two.
