Fir or pine?

Both fir and pine trees are conifers and belong to the Pinaceae family. Fir trees are of the Abies genus while pine trees are of the Pinus genus. Fir trees, whose species number around 50, are native to cold and mountainous regions of the northern hemisphere. Pines, with their 120 or so species, have a wider distribution. Firs have a conical shape and small densely arranged leaves. They make good Christmas trees. Pines are rounder with longer, softer and more pliant needles.

Although firs are not native to Australia they will still grow here in the right conditions. My blip shows a bonsai fir tree, grown by the Resident Gardener.

Thanks for hosting Kathy. Stay well all.
