Carol: Rosie & Mr. Fun

2020 Saturday — First Day New Month

The photo reveals that we are going for a ride and Chloe wants to find a place to walk. She is right. We drove all through Cayucos and were stunned at the number of people in this town and on the shoreline. Then on to Morro Bay. We knew Tidelands Park would be full of people enjoying this day in Nature, so we stopped at Bayside Bluffs Park.

This was a day for casual viewing and slow-stepping, while contemplating all that’s happened and the joy of ignorance, the bliss of naïveté, and the grace of inexperience.

For a long time the song “First Day in August,” (which also mentions the last day of July) has been a special song for us. It moved from special to extra-special 8-years ago. Usually every year we listen to that song more than twice on each of these two days — the last day of July and the first day of August. This date is a landmark moment for us.

Eight years ago Mr. Fun & I walked through our little Cayucos house for the first time with our realtor on July 31st and then a second time late on the afternoon of August 1. Because we lived 4-hours away, we’d been waiting a month to see this property.

To say the least, the house was a shack, a “fixer-upper” in every way. One Cayucos real estate agent told Mr. Fun, “Tear it down. Just scrape it off the hill.” We were bewildered and excited all at the same time.

The two “walk-thru” experiences presented to us a house that was livable, but it was so full of the renters belongings and had just enough quirky things wrong with it, that I am not sure that we understood the potential of the property.

Today we celebrate that we both agreed back then that we wanted to make an offer and so we did. The owners countered our offer, and then we countered again, and well you know how that goes. We all finally agreed on a price.

So the first page of our history here had been penned. It’s a story and a journey that we reflect on every July 31st and August 1st, so ignore us while we get nostalgic and sentimental. We like making trail markers.

Good night from
California’s Central Coast
in Cayucos,
