Motorbike mad

Scanned photo of my dad (back) and his friend and next-door neighbour Donald Jackson in the early 1950s. My dad and his mates were all motorbike mad.

I seem to remember that dad always used to say this was taken after "square bashing" but now realise I had no idea what that meant. Did he mean when he finished his National Service?
