Too Darn Hot!

I know that Bellingham isn't as hot as many other places on this Sunday in mid-August, but this fire-toned day lily we passed on the morning dog walk, just before 9 a.m. reminded me of flames.

There was no breeze at all today, and because our weather is usually temperate, we don't have air conditioning. At 9:30 p.m., the temperature in the "office" Phil and I share upstairs was 83 F /28 C. Outside was a little cooler at 75 F /24 C.

And our politics are equally hot: the indomitable Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the House of Representatives, is recalling House members early from their summer recess "to vote on a bill prohibiting the USPS [US Postal Service] from changing its operations or service levels from what it had in place at the start of 2020." (The Guardian, US version, Aug. 18).

Our so-called President is pulling out every stop to try to ensure that he will be re-elected, including making it more difficult to vote by mail. "An unprecedented number of Americans are expected to vote by mail this year because of the Covid-19 pandemic," The Guardian article noted.

We're grateful that our state (Washington) adopted statewide voting by mail in 2011.
