Irish women are feisty bitches, as you know. But I think we had to be, because it didn't matter if a girl was first-born, the (eldest) son always got everything. So you knew pretty quickly that you either stayed and got married or you had to emigrate (which also explains in part why we all now speak English here instead of Gaelic, but anyhooo...) as soon as you were old enough. 
I noticed this commemorative plaque on a narrow laneway up in Cork City's Shandon district. I can imagine this girl's fate would have been cleaning up after a load of kids and treated like a skivvy. She may as well go to America and get paid well for it.
