Cousin Diana's WVS work in Gloucester

Lorna joined the Women's Voluntary Service (WVS) at the very start of World War II. Her first contribution to the war effort was work on ration cards, as noted in her diary entry of 16th October 1939.

Lorna's Cousin Diana also worked as a volunteer for the WVS during the war. Alongside patrolling the rooftops of Gloucester Cathedral as a firewatcher, she helped with efforts to add to the blood supplies needed to treat war casualties.

This photograph from 1941 shows Cousin Diana seated at a desk in her WVS uniform taking details from a worker at the Gloucester Railway Carriage and Wagon Company. Diana is 21 or 22 in this picture.

(Cousin Diana is the only daughter of Lorna's Uncle Percy L and Aunt May, whose wedding party we blipped on 22nd August 2020. Uncle Percy L was the youngest of Lorna's father Albert's four brothers.)
