My Unicorn Is Dead

It’s a detail from a fabric bookmark, hand-made by Luke who’s in his early 20s, as a gift for K. He was writing on the poetry of Hugh McCrae, an Australian vitalist poet of the early 20th century, now well out of fashion.

The quote is from McCrae’s “Lament”, a poem about a wood nymph who fell in love with a unicorn. The verse reads:

My unicorn... my unicorn is dead;
He with the swift long flanks and kingly head,
The great tall spiring horn... the yellow-eyed
Fierce-bearded husband of the forest side.

I might have gone too far with brushstroke, but at least it’s abstract.

The original bookmark is the extra.
