Stones on Sunday

This was my "haul" of stones from last weeks trip.

They are Petoskey stones, and it is Michigan's state stone.

The stones are hard to find, and have to be wet in order to see the "cells." Words on Wikipedia to describe them include fossil, glaciation, coral reefs, and the Devonian Period.

We waded into Lake Michigan, and were excited to find a few. In years past, we have sanded them down to make the patterns stand out more.

We have a state law that you can "harvest" up to 25 pounds. I was well under the limit.
