Wingstem

This is Verbesina alternifolia growing in the brush near the creek. its common name comes from the wing-like extensions on the sides of the stem. I have tried to show this in the illustration where  the stem is circled in blue. I think you can see it if you enlarge it. An interesting variation and I have no idea what the evolutionary significance of such a variation would be!
