Life after Burradoo, NSW

Whimsical logic

This is my paternal grandmother. She was born 139 years ago today although she didn’t want her birthday to be 9 September so she declared it was 3 October. Why?  Because it’s the feastday of St Theresa!

Nan was part of a very traditional Irish Catholic family. She was the youngest of eleven children although five of her siblings died in infancy. Her father emigrated in 1857 from Kent in England to Australia on his own when he was 17. Four years later he married an Irish Catholic immigrant who had arrived in Australia in 1855. They lived in country New South Wales and became publicans.

Nan inherited not only the faith from her Irish mother but a whimsical logic. Even when her birth certificate was found she claimed it was wrong! It didn’t matter. She was a fun Nan and we celebrated her birthday when she wanted it to be celebrated.

Nan lived until she was 96. She still had her lovely curly hair although the wonderful thickness had gone.
