Lozarhythm Of The Day:
The Beatles- Twist and Shout (recorded 11 February 1963)
I hadn't intended to post a blip today, but this occasion cannot go unremarked. The Beatles recorded all ten of the previously unreleased tracks for their debut album, Please Please Me, fifty years ago today, making the three sessions of the day possibly the most influential 585 minutes in musical history.
John Lennon had a rough voice because he was suffering from a cold and spent all day sucking Zubes cough sweets in between takes. George Martin saved Twist And Shout for the final fifteen minutes of the day, knowing that Lennon's voice would be shot afterwards, and this first take was the only completed rendition of the song. It was released as a single in some countries including the US, and in the UK was the lead track of an EP that actually reached the singles chart (highly unusual for an EP).
It was one of half a dozen covers included on the album, having been recorded previously by the Top Tunes, produced by Phil Spector, under a different title, and more successfully by the Isley Brothers in 1962. The Isleys' version was produced by its co-writer, Bert Berns, to show Spector how it should have been done. Berns was a hugely underrated producer and songwriter (Cry To Me, Here Comes The Night, Piece Of My Heart, Hang On Sloopy, I Want Candy etc.), who died of heart failure at 38.
Ten days earlier, the Beatles had played in my home town of Sutton Coldfield, in a tiny church hall at the bottom of my grandparents' road, St Peter's in Maney Hill Road. I had no idea! As a schoolboy aged about ten just a couple of years earlier I was once invited to that church to do the reading one Sunday.
