Fishing on the Tweed

After leaving Lindisfarne we turned right instead of left and went a short distance north to the town of Berwick on Tweed, a town of hapless fortune as it is built on the border between Scotland and England. Both countries have claimed it as their own several times.
We went for a saunter along the river banks to admire the 3 great bridges that cross it when l saw a group of people out netting fish. I have not seen this way of fishing in a river before and wondered what they might be trying to catch. The river is famous for its salmon but l don't think it would have been on this occasion.
