Shrove Tuesday

In Brazil, this would be the last day of "Carnaval", when we always had a fun four days with all the young people staying in our house and the church.

Here in Sutton (and UK in general, going by the number of blips like mine) it's a day for eating pancakes. Why? Well, it's to use up your fat (as in mardi gras - grease, in the USA) and eggs before the fasting of Lent begins. And the "shrove" comes from being "shriven", or forgiven of your sins before Lent.

Our community is going to try to do 40 Acts and "do Lent generously", as in 40acts.org.uk - blips might reflect it...

We had 15 folk round for pancakes - M made them all until we had to go out, and then Julia and others carried on. We had them stuffed with chicken, mushrooms and leeks, in a white sauce in the oven, plus the usual sweet ones with strawberries and fromage frais, lemon and sugar, chocolate and banana - and M's special, flambeed with cachaca - you can see where the flames caught the stove.
