An Emergency Trip to Nelson

I had an emergency trip to Nelson at lunch time with son C. He had to go to the Dentist , have a couple of x-rays to find the dental problem, and had another appointment made for a later date to get the tooth fixed.

On the way into Nelson, I stopped around Rocks Road to take some photo's. I love travelling around this area - there is always something different to see. This afternoon it was a full tide, and rather windy. This in turn made the sea rather choppy, with white caps on the waves. There were lots of people on the beach, a few swimming, and along the road further, about 4 or 5 young men fishing - all of which I took photo's off.

However, it was this photo that took my fancy. This is Fifeshire Rock. Originally named Arrow Rock in honor of the Arrow (one of the three ships that entered Nelson Haven in 1841 opening the area up for setlement) the rock is a sea stack straddling the southern entrance to harbor. The following year another ship, the Fifeshire, arrived bringing settlers. As it departed, the Fifeshire struck Arrow Rock and sank. The Rock was thus renamed Fifeshire Rock for the 1842 sinking of the first ship bringing settlers.

Better in large.
