Tewit Well Harrogate...

I went a walkabout this morning before the day heated up, in the current unusual September weather.

I photographed this Harrogate landmark and decided to use it as one of my Then & Now blips. Quite a change of subject matter from yesterday.

Harrogate became known as a Spa town after several mineral wells were discovered in the late sixteenth century. A well at this spot was one of the first to be discovered in 1571, by William Slingsby.

The dome over the well arrived much later (designed by William Chippendale in 1807) ; it was originally built over the sulphur wells in the centre of town (because they attracted more visitors).

The dome was moved to this spot when the present grand dome was constructed for those Sulphur wells.

The old photograph shows the building with solid walls. I think it looks much nicer now that the pillars are properly displayed.

The tree at the front of the building blocked the view slightly, so I didn't get an exact match of viewpoint for today's shot.
