Nets and a trip to the seaside

Until quite recently stake nets were set to catch migrating salmon at the mouth of the river Ythan. These are the remnants of the stakes that held the nets in place.

The extra is another scanned photograph from the family albums. This time from my family. Taken around 1920 it shows a charabanc named Lilian  with my grandfather and mother sitting on the left at the back.

Charabancs were an early form of bus, used typically for pleasure trips. The word comes from the 19th century from French char-à-bancs ‘carriage with benches’ (the original horse-drawn charabancs having rows of bench seats).
