Winding Point

This is a winding point on a canal (winding as in wind blows). When canal barges were all pulled by horses on the towpath, it was difficult to turn the barge around. The winding point was a widening in a canal so that the bow or stern of the barge could be pushed out until it caught the wind and then the wind would slowly turn the barge around until it faced in the opposite direction.
