Out of season

A grey and breezy late afternoon walk round Castor Hanglands felt decidedly autumnal - at long last the Devil's-bit Scabious was in flower, though the recent return of cattle to the site meant that much of it was cow-bit.

The first few Parasol Mushrooms were appearing in the grassland alongside a large number of Field Mushrooms, most of which were past their best. But I was surprised to see a few flowers on the Marsh-marigold - a spring-flowering species that I've never noticed flowering in September before.
