Lago de Lucendro

The weather forecast was so amazing, Mr S persuaded me (quite easily) to take a day off to do a hiking tour in the Gotthard area. We parked the car in Hospental, then got the bus to the top of the Gotthardpass (2091m). Absolutely perfect weather, hot and completely calm. We set off walking around the Lago de Lucendro, then headed up to the top of the Lucendro pass (2532m) there was lots of evidence of the start Swiss military presence all around, including a latrine block at 2500m!
We had lunch looking south to Val Leventina and The Nufenen Pass. The footpath over the crest, and short cut to the Cavanna Pass was closed due to an earth slide, making 5m a bit tricky. It was in fact just one exposed step that was tricky, which Mr S pulled me over! So glad to go this way, otherwise we would have dropped down 500m then had a much longer way around. It was incredibly dry on the south facing slope, all streams and lakes were completely dried out. After 5 km we joined the track up to the Cavanna Pass. I found this tough going, I could feel the altitude already at 2600m. The highest point on the Ronggergrat was 2726m, then we dropped down to the Hüendersattel, at first an excellent path, but then steep and loose down the moraines of the Witenwasseren Glacier.
We arrived at the Rotondohütte at 18.15, with time for a quick drink and change before dinner was served at 18.30. there were only two other small groups so we had a dorm to ourselves, a complete luxury at an SAC hut.
