The World Through My Eyes

Spindle

or Cardinal's hat, Kardinaalsmuts in Dutch...
All parts of the shrub contain toxins that cause disease, at least for humans. When ingested, people can suffer from drowsiness, diarrhea, vomiting and stomach cramps. The seeds are eaten by birds. Livestock and wild animals can eat this shrub without any problems. Woodworkers were apprehensive about the fresh sawdust, the hard heartwood was used for turning. Too long in the pungent air caused vomiting. Weaving and spinning coils were made from the wood. The English name for the tree indicates this: spindle tree. Sheepherders made knitting holders that they could beautifully decorate with carving. The plant is now popular in gardens because of its beautifully colored leaves and distinct fruits.
