Time was when the tatties were howked by hand. It was all hands to the pumps, and incredibly hard work. Schools would close for two weeks, if only because the children wouldn't be there anyway, helping shoulder the burden.

Those days are gone, as you see,  with tractors queuing up to take away the crop. See extra. But the fortnight's school holiday remains.
