Fungus at Byron's Pool

Mike and I both had today off, and with Matthew in after school club til 5 and a mild forecast we'd planned longish day out on the bikes. We woke to drizzle, but set off anyway to take Matthew to school, as the rain got heavier.

It continued to alternate between drizzle and fairly solid rain all morning, as we headed into the wind in our waterproofs we took a byway near Comberton and hit the first obstacle: mud! Never mind, we'll walk this section of bridlepath, we thought, but as we heard banging in the woods and spotted a red flag ahead we soon found a gate across the path, and a sentry who knew of no way round and said theyd be firing till lunchtime, so we turned back.

We briefly tried to rejoin our route a bit further on, but balked at the surface, and took a different bridlepath heading back towards Coton, where it soon became clear we really had picked the wrong way for off-road riding, with wheels spinning at times on what would normally be a fine surface.

We decided to take the better part of valour and headed back through Grantchester for a walk round the woods at Byron's Pool, and even there we had to detour round a fallen tree, though there were some excellent fungi to be seen. Back at last via the newish route through the country park and over the M11 to Hauxton, Little Shelford and home - in time to eat our picnic in the warm and dry :)
