Clegg Hall

This is Clegg Hall, a 17th Century hall in Smithy Bridge, Littleborough, Nr. Rochdale.
It has had a tumultuous  history.   Built in the early 17th century by Theophilus Ashton (now there's a name....), from 1818 to 1869 it was a public house called the Horse and Hounds and is reputed to be haunted. There had also been counterfeiting activities carried out in the vaults and cellars.....
Some time in the 1950s there was a fire at the hall which caused severe damage and the building was left in ruins (see my extra taken in 2002)  until the Hebden Bridge based charity Pennine Heritage Trust bought it and saved the hall from demolition. This was until a new owner could be found who would sympathetically rebuild and restore the hall.
This has been done and the hall is now in private ownership.
