The dropped stitch

Horse Mill, Mirkady, Deerness

A fantastic start to the day with the chance to look inside this horse mill. A beautiful building from the outside (see extra), and the interior of the roof is stunning.

Well hidden among the buildings of the old farm steading, it's a listed building. Apparently by the 1870s most farms in Orkney had either a horse or water driven threshing mill. This one would have required two horses. What a task for them - walking endlessly round and round. A small consolation was that this mill provided a roof over their heads - which was unusual.
