Old Spey Bridge, Grantown

The bridge was built in 1754 but was partially destroyed in the Muckle Spate of 1829 and subsequently repaired. The river is running high after the recent rain but even so it is impossible to imagine the destructive force of the water in 1829 when so many bridges along the length of the Spey were destroyed. The bridge used to carry the main road to Inverness over the river but is now a footbridge only. The bracing consists of railway girders and is relatively modern. The extra was taken walking along the bank if the river to the replacement road bridge.
