Seaton Park

Brig O’ Balgownie
The bridge dates back to 1320 and was the main crossing over the River Don until 1831.  It is one of a few medieval bridges still in use in Scotland today although it is now reduced to being a pedestrian thoroughfare.  Many believe it is Scotland’s oldest bridge.  Another claim to fame is that the bridge is mentioned in the epic poem ‘Don Juan’ which was written by Lord Byron**.

Lord Byron
Born in London, George Gordon Byron, he moved to Aberdeen as a young child when he and his Scottish mother, Catherine Gordon, were abandoned by his father who had squandered the Gordon family fortune.

Byron was educated at a local primary school in Aberdeen before attending the Grammar School there.  Later he was sent to Harrow School in London where he furthered his education before attending Trinity College, Cambridge.

After leaving university Byron led a very flamboyant lifestyle as a romantic poet, rebel and champion of liberty. He died in Greece, aged 36, whilst pursuing romantic adventures of heroism!
