Luck

We went on a little research field trip at lunchtime to a local church. I don’t think I’ve noticed a lucky horseshoe on a church doorway anywhere before, but I thought it was a nice touch. They’re supposed to bring good luck and protection although there seems to be some disagreement about whether to hang them as pictured (‘heels up’) or ‘heels down’. The former is thought to prevent the good luck from running out of the shoe, while the latter is believed to let the good luck flow on to those who walk below it. I guess there are pros and cons to both approaches!
