Book of the duchess: carrying off the duchess

Number 21: Infuriated by his sufferings, which he deems to be her fault alone, Michael carries off the duchess

The plot episode 20 (summarised from the text of Lorna’s novel)

In the mêlée Michael carried off the duchess, whom Michael still considered the begetter of all his woes. Meanwhile Guillot escaped to raise an army against the Saint Etiennists.

Lorna’s remarks

You bet he does! Of course, she was dominated by Guillot and it was not her fault.

This picture is dreadfully melodramatic and has come in for a good bit of adverse criticism, which it deserves. I am the only one who can see where the white horse’s head is, but then I ought to be able to!

The only thing that could be said of it is that it moves, but then only at the expense of the paper and much very dirty drawing.

The sunset gets lurider and lurider, doesn’t it? I said this was a bad patch.
