Breaking the Pattern

This is a very old soda syphon that I remember so well my father using  many, many years ago!  I think the red line (which breaks the pattern) was to show how far you should fill it with water.  I expect it still works but somehow I don't dare give it a try.  As you can see, it is not in the best/cleanest condition but was in the right place at the right time as I scanned the kitchen for today's challenge!  Thank you Ingeborg for hosting.
