Book of the duchess: Raoul cautions Michael

Number 25: Before the walls of Vannes, Michael refuses to be persuaded not to fight Guillot, whom he has challenged

The plot episode 24 (summarised from the text of Lorna’s novel)

The Battle of Vannes was short, bloody and decisive - and a win for Michael and his supporters.

The Saint Etiennists captured Guillot and many called for his death. Michael, however, hesitated. Instead he granted an audience with the former Provost marshal of the duchy. Here Guillot presented Michael with proof of his birth. At length, Michael was obliged to recognise Guillot as his uncle.

Following discussion with Raoul, who argued that Michael should not fight Guillot, Michael decided upon a course of action. He would meet his uncle in one final battle with the intention of overthrowing him then sending him into exile.

Lorna’s remarks

Very much cleaner, but rather lacking in animation like a costume design. Chiefly noticeable for the extreme care with which the armour and accoutrements have been drawn and painted. Raoul gets a fair deal (or do I mean fair face?) at last. I think, however, that the town makes the picture a bit top-heavy, although it is a good town.
