"Mighty oaks from little acorns grow"  Mats are put down in autumn in Dalkeith Park to collect acorns before they are taken by squirrels, mice or other creatures.  Some of the many ancient oaks in Dalkeith Country Park are 800 years old and home to some very rare beetles making it a SSSI.  Perhaps some of the trees grown from those acorns might be around in another 500 years or more but meanwhile there are still millions of acorns left for the wildlife.  (A short excerpt can be seen on “Landward” on BBC Two at 9am tomorrow)   It was a day of heavy showers and strong winds but also of beautiful rainbows.
