Life in Newburgh on Ythan

beach combing

After the recent storms our beach is currently covered with flotsam and jetsam of all kinds. Most unusual of all was a plaited golden wig, swept from the head of some unfortunate  mermaid!

I also met a young woman who had just picked up an empty plastic potato crisp bag from the beach. Astonishingly it was largely intact  but had the price of 5d printed on it; d, of course, was the symbol for an old penny, from the Roman denarius. The truly worrying thing is that it was way back in February 1971 that that Britain "went decimal" and stopped using old pennies. It would seem that our plastic rubbish will outlive us all!
