Cliffe fort

Today's 'steps' were taken walking through the RSPB reserve to Cliffe fort on the Hoo peninsula. The only birds were swans and coots, but the fort was an interesting ruin. Built in the 1860's to guard the river Thames from seaborne attack it included the first guided missile torpedo installation using wires to direct them! I can't find any reference to them working or not! The fort was used as an anti-aircraft battery during WWII.

A truly safe place from the virus as I didn't see anyone other than a couple of workers on the gravel extraction machinery that now surrounds the fort.
