Great Western Hotel, Cobar

Today we arrived in Cobar where it was 36°C. So desperate for some air con beyond the motel room, we repaired to the Great Western Hotel, built in 1898 and claiming to have the longest verandah (91m) in NSW.

The GWH is huge and one can imagine that it would have been jumping in its heyday, when the population was 10,000 due to mining, mainly for copper. In the 1930s it slumped to 1,000 and is now around 4,000 in response to the mining boom. The mining of gold, silver, copper, lead and zinc is the main basis of Cobar's economy.

Today the GWH needs some TLC. It has many rooms, some functional, some closed, and some not sure of what they want to be. The main shows one such. The reflective surface is the mirror in the solid wooden frame behind the bar.

The extra shows the staircase, on the landing of which is a mirrored hall stand doubling up as a wash stand.
