Lovely walks around Pateley Bridge, up to St Mary’s church, a no-roof church on top of the hill, along Panorama Walk, through Glasshouses and along the River Nidd back to Pateley Bridge. We celebrated with a pie!

St Mary’s Church (see extra) was built in the late 13th Century but fell into disrepair during the early 1800s. It closed in 1826 having become too small for the congregation, too expensive to maintain and too difficult to reach due to the severe gradient of the hill. The roof was removed to fund the construction of the new church, St. Cuthbert’s. The burial ground of the church includes the grave of “Mary Myers of Northwoods (died) 1743, aged near 120 years. Now that’s a good age!
