Amstel River

This is the Amstel River, seen from the Berlage Bridge. Berlage was a famous social democratic dutch architect, well known for the Beurs van Berlage. This is a true example of a so called 'gesamtkunstwerk'.
This river gave Amsterdam its name.
On the righthand side you can see a big white office building, Rivierstaete. It was build between 1967 and 1973 and was the highest european office building in its early years. In Amsterdam it soon was nicknamed 'de Apenrots' (the Monkey Rock) because of its shape.
On the lefthand side you can see 'de Omval'. Here the river makes a bend. Rembrandt, the dutch painter, made a etching of this location.
At the Omval you can find three large office buildings. They are named after famous dutch painters. The Rembrandttower is the highest office building in the Netherlands and is 135 meters high. The other two buildings are the Mondriaantower (123 meter) and the Breitnertower (95 meter and the head office of Philips).
The famous Amsterdam houseboats are also moored here alongside the Amstel.
