Cloistered Resting Place

The Watts Cemetery Chapel (extra) is a glorious example of the Arts and Crafts movement. It was designed by Mary Watts, the wife of the renown Victorian Painter G F Watts, whose home is nearby along with their Studio, now the Watts Gallery and Artist's Village (sadly closed currently for obvious reasons). The chapel was largely built and decorated by the local Compton village community after tutoring by Mary, an artist in her own right, using red clay found on the Watts'  land.

The cemetery is still in use, and I spotted a grave as recent as June 2020  for a gentleman of 85.  The gravestone featured above is that of G F and Mary Watts, again in the distinctive red clay, with the open door  to the cloister including memorials to the Watts and directors of the gallery.
