Kennetpans

Was out and about near Clackmannan this morning and came upon this  old ruin which, astonishingly, was the world's first industrial scale whisky distillery!
In the 1700s the local Stein family started dabbling in whisky distilling.  by 1730 it was the largest of Scotland's distilleries.
John Stein's daughter married John Haig in 1751 and went on to form Haig whisky.  Another member of the family was John Jamieson, who worked in the Dublin branch of the distillery and founded Jamieson's Irish whiskey.
In the late 18th century the Stein family suffered from tax issues, lawsuits and an ill fated attempt to intercept the London gin market's rise and the distillery was abandoned in 1825, left to its own devices at the end of a farm track on the banks of the Forth.
