Obstacles

A short walk down to the river with MrM this afternoon, very grey and gloomy but good to get out for a while and stretch our legs!

There are so many man-made obstacles for salmon and sea trout attempting to swim upriver to spawn that it's amazing that many of them ever manage to complete the journey. On a very short stretch of the Wooler Water are three huge 'hurdles' for them to overcome. This weir is steeper than it looks in the photo, and the fish ladder not ideally placed. A short distance upstream is a weir under the bridge, no less steep than this. Finally, not far away, the ford at Haugh Head, the most challenging of the three, where many fish fail in the attempt.

Very good to speak with both Lucy and Tom this evening.
