Headstone

Today's the day ………………………. to find a grave

If you do any family history research involving the town of Kirkcudbright, it soon becomes obvious that ships and sailing has played an important part over the centuries, in the lives of its inhabitants.

There were a considerable number of local men, often several generations of the same families, who moved from ship to ship at regular intervals - and were involved in many ways as masters, crew, owners and the like.  Captain John McMillan that I wrote about a few days ago had a sister who was married to another Master Mariner, Captain Thomas Anderson.  Unlike John, Thomas managed to avoid a major disaster at sea - but nevertheless died while he was still fairly young with a large family to support.

This is the top of the headstone of Thomas' grave showing that he was indeed a man of the sea.  You can see the rest of it (if you so desire!) on a very useful website that we've found called findagrave.com …………………..
