Timothy Bennet and Cobblers Walk

L2 Day 22 - Timothy Bennet and Cobblers Walk. Cycled into Bushy Park through our nearest gate in Hampton Wick. By this gate there is a memorial and an information board. Timothy Bennet (1679-1756) was a Hampton man who had a shoemakers shop in Hampton Wick. In 1752 Lord Halifax had closed the path through Bushy Park so his customers no longer passed his shop on the way to Kingston. His principle in life was that he was ‘unwilling to leave the world worse than he found it’. He challenged Lord Halifax who eventually reopened the path which is still there today, is enjoyed by the public and is called Cobblers Walk.
