Come and nest in me

said the gnarled old tree,
as it held in the crook
of its fingers three
a grassy hole
where a home could be.
"It's ready-lined, so cosily,
come, feathered friends,
keep me company."

And the birds said,
"Thanks. We'll have to see ..."
