Hans Heysen

This print hangs in my sewing room. I bought it when I visited the artist's home and studio in Hahndorf in the hills just above Adelaide,I Visiting art galleries out there we learnt about many wonderful Australian artists we hadn't heard of before - Arthur Streeton, Tom Roberts and Margaret Preston among others. Early artist settlers in Australia painted landscapes as if they were in Europe failing to capture the special nature, flora and fauna of their new land.
Hans Heysen who came here as a child was known for his accurate depiction of gum trees but this more intimate portrait of his wife at her sewing hangs in his home. The window, table and sewing machine are still there but the  stitcher is long gone.
