Gathurst Bridge

The Manchester to Southport railway line runs through here, along the bottom of the Douglas Valley, parallel to the Leeds Liverpool canal and River Douglas.
Waiting at the traffic lights here to go up the steep (13%) hill on the other side is like waiting for the ‘lights out’ signal at the start of an F1 race: choose gear, accelerate through the bridge with a touch of left hand steer, then floor it through the gears to get up the incline!
Depending on the weather, it has its moments!
In days long gone by, it was the last leg of the school cross country course back to base at the top of the hill. Bred us tough did our PE teachers!!
